Exploring State Game Land 38

There’s an area of SGL38 that I’ve always wanted to check out and I finally took the time.

My guess is that this was a stand of pine and I was correct.

It was a nice walk, about 4.25 miles round trip in rainy but warm conditions.

I would like to learn more about this area. Is it a utility pole farm? Why was this planted? Why does it have a road around it – well, not really a “road” but a clear relatively wide trail. It is easy to access from Hypsy Gap Road with part of the trail coming off the road with a few large rocks blocking access but you can also get to it from the fire road to the east of it.

Another interesting feature that is new to SGL38 is a new road they’ve cut through it very recently. I’ve not been back there for a while so I did not see this until recently. I start by walking into the SQL at the end of Blanding Drive in SIerra View. There is an older trail that runs north to Tunkhannock Creek and South down to Lower Sierra View – ultimately to Foothill Drive. That trail still exists but this new road branches off the old trail just above where Hypsy Creek crosses the old path and then it heads Northeast to connect up to Hypsy Gap Road where it merges with and replaces an older trail.

This used to be rocks and trees like most of the Hypsy Creek area – see below for an example. This shot with the chair (probably someone’s hunting area) is just down the hill toward Hypsy Creek from the new road and shows the basic mess that this new road cuts through.

I pretend to hunt (I never see anything) in this area so I’ve been going back there to see what has changed and to explore the area. I’ll continue doing that. Its always fun to find these weird features like chairs in random places. I have a couple posts already of old tree stands in the area and I found yet another one but did not get a pic of that.
