Peebles Island State Park, Albany NY

Peebles Island is an island in the Mohawk River near Albany, NY where the Mohawk connects to the Hudson River. There is an old textile factory – or something like that from what I remember. There’s a great trail around the edge of the island and I think a few through the middle – I just did the trail around the edge of the island. What impressed me the most were the high cliffs with steep drop-offs straight down into the river. Quite a few deer there as well and some woodchucks.

Accessible via a bridge – there’s one bridge to get on the island and one bridge to get off the island.

This was an absolutely fascinating dam structure. I have no idea what the purpose of this was but it seems to control the flow of the Mohawk going to the north side of the island.

Here’s a nice view of some of the cliffs dropping off into the river. Part of the trail is visible left-center in the photo.

This is an interesting section on the east side of the island. Quite a rocky area.

OK, this next photo is not of Peebles Island but it was nearby. I was trying to see as much as I could given the limited time I had while my wife was in a bunch of meetings in the area.

This was in the Vischer Ferry Preserve at the junction of Riverview Road and Van Vranken Road. I loved how green the water was and the bridge over the Erie Canal was very interesting. Apparently, there is the Towpath trail just on the other side of the bridge. I ran out of time and had to go pick my wife up so did not really have much time to explore.

Quite a beautiful and historic area and I’d recommend exploring this region.
