Walt Whitman Trail/West Hills Park/Jayne’s Hill

Jayne’s Hill is the highest point on Long Island at a whopping 400 feet above sea level. The trails there are excellent. I usually park at the dead-end road (Reservoir Road) near the top of the hill by the water tower. That’s a great place to start from. You may encounter horses and dogs on the trails. I’ve not been there since there was a illegal dumping incident but I don’t think that impacted too much of the trail. I’ve only been to the area between Sweethollow Road and Reservoir Road/Ridge Road but I believe the trail network is much more extensive than that.

This is the beginning of the trail directly at the end of Reservoir Road. Nice start to the trail, for sure.

This weird tee-pee like lean-to structure was quite an odd thing to find in the middle of the park. I believe there were a couple of these. I’m not sure who actually built them but it was an interesting thing to find.

This is a knot in a tree that had a really haunting feature (see the closeup below). So I’m going to go with the theory that this is a haunted tree and that is the face of a ghost from either the indigenous people buried here or maybe an early settler. Or it’s just a knot in a tree.

Another pic of the trail – these cuts seem to be erosion over time – probably water running off the top of the hill.

Limbo practice on the trail. This was just a tree that had fallen over a section of trail. These trails are very well maintained though. There are some areas that can get a little thick with brush but it is mostly nice open trail.
